Preliminary results regarding the behavior of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) cultivated in the south-east of Romania

Abstract
Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is one of China’s most important fruit species.
In Romania, in the Dobrogea area, between the Danube River and the Black Sea, few local jujube genotypes have been found close to some historical sites of Roman and Byzantine fortresses.
The plant, nearly unknown in Romania, is named ‘Dobrogea olive’ by the locals, and the fruits are rarely used for eating.
Only the ‘Ostrov’ genotype, with tree habitus, has interesting fruit for fresh and dry consumption.
After introducing several jujube varieties at the Faculty of Horticulture in București, mainly from Shanxi Province, jujube fruits were analyzed from a pomological and biochemical point of view.
In 2019, a demonstration field was established at the Fruit Research and Development Station Istriţa.
The first cultivars were planted at 4.0×1.5 m; some others were over-grafted on seedlings in 2021. This study aimed to monitor the behavior of some jujube genotypes in different areas of South-East Romania regarding growth, productivity, and the physical and biochemical properties of fruits.
