Abstract
English Walnut (Juglans regia L.) occurs in southernmost Italy, usually intercropped with other nut and fruit trees in a small scale system in which it plays only a marginal economic role.
However thanks to the high market prices of nuts and wood, this species could potentially be improved in many environments.
However thanks to the high market prices of nuts and wood, this species could potentially be improved in many environments.
With this aim our Institute started in 1987 a research programme concerning walnut trials in a hilly area of Calabria named "Le Serre".
The performance of 18 cultivars originating from France, Germany and U.S.A. were compared and traditional and high density planting systems were tested.
After two seasons the vegetative growth has been satisfactory, showing the good health of the trees.
Phenological differences among cultivars have been observed.
