Abstract
There are about 60 million seedling trees of walnut in bearing in china.
From these, 100–140 thousand tons of dry in-shell walnut are produced annually.
The average yield of each tree is only about 1.7–2.3kg.
Most of these seedlings came into bearing at the age of 6–8 years old.
In 1960, Xin Jiang precocious walnut( lateral fruitfulness type) was introduced into Beijing and has been extensively planted since 1970. Unfortunately, only about twenty percent of these seedling trees possess precocious characteristics.
A special cooperative group organized by the Chinese Ministry of Forestry was engaged in research program of walnut improvement(1978– 1990).
