Abstract
In 1976 a program to study the possibility of introducing in Italy a commercial Pecan industry was begun, according to the following schedule:
- During 1976, collection and review of world literature on Pecan, mainly from U.S.
- Identification, in South Italy, of the environments, suitable for this species, native in North America.
- Contacts with U.S. Pecan specialists of the Universities of Texas and Georgia.
- In 1978, introduction from C.E.S. University of Georgia, of open pollinated seeds of the cultivar Curtis, to use as seedling rootstock.
- In 1981–82, introduction from U.S. Pecan Field Station, Texas, of 12 named cultivars, grafted in the nursery on Curtis seedlings.
- At present we have 80 grafted trees of 12 U.S. cultivars: Shawnee, Green River, Shoshoni, Peruque, Cape Fear, Choctaw, Cheyenne, Elliot, Wichita, Kiowa, Mohawk, Stuart.
- Next step will be the planting of a variety testing trial in Metaponto area.
