Abstract
The frosts of January 1985 (the absolute minimum temperature was -20°C) gave the opportunity to make observations about the damages occurred to walnut trees grown in a variety collection in Reggio Emilia.

For each cultivar the following parameters were taken into consideration:

  • damaged tree percentage;

  • trunk crack number and size;

  • cicatrization degree during the years following the winter frosts.

The results pointed out an evident susceptibility among the varieties.
In particular the Californian varieties showed to have a lesser hardiness However this susceptibility does not compromise their survival.
