BREEDING EARLY FRUITING, HIGH PRODUCING WALNUT CULTIVARS LEAFING AFTER LATE SPRING FROSTS
It follows that potential fruitfulness is limited by the number of terminal buds on the tree.
Though there are some better producing varieties of the Carpathian race wich develop sometimes female flowers on lateral buds, however in a very small percentage (e. g. on our cv.
M 10 0–25 %, cv.
T 2 0–30 %, T 83 0–35 %), and only in a few favourable years.
The Manchurian group had been introduced to California from Europe about a century ago, and crosses with the French varieties gave rise to a walnut type fruiting steadily and in high percentage on the termed lateral buds of previous years growth.
The first of this type’s varieties was "Payne", wich gave the basis of a great cross breading programm at the University of California, resulting in the 50s a series of high bearing varieties suiting several different sites.
As a favour of the breeder, Mr.
E.F. Serr, pomologist, our Institution received some valuable selections for observation.
Under the climate of Hungary the selections 53–113 and 58–11 showed the best performance.
Both have been released to commercial production in Hungary in the year 1969 under the name of "Pedro".
