Abstract
Results from research on apricot bacterial diseases obtained in the scope of an European Union project are briefly summarised.
These results include new information on the sensitivity of apricot germplasm to its most important bacterial diseases in Europe, as well as to scientific developments in areas with a great potential economic impact: endophytic survival of Agrobacterium and resistance induced through grafting, cross infectivity of Xanthomonas campestris pv. pruni on several Prunus species, and new data on the pathogenicity of epiphytic fluorescent Pseudomonas from the countries of southern Europe.
Conclusions stress the benefits of the well structured co-operative, supranational effort which made the acquisition of these results possible, and the consequences of discontinuing its funding when several promising approaches were in different degrees of achievement, preventing their conclusion and the quick transfer of technology to the producers.
