EVALUATION OF SOME ROMANIAN APRICOT VARIETIES IN HUNGARY

Phenology of blooming and ripening, fertility relations, hardiness and fruit characters of 11 apricot varieties bred and selected in Romania were studied and evaluated from the point of view of being grown in Hungary in order to complement the assortment of useful varieties.

The varieties were studied in two localities, both representing conditions of the central lowland of the country, Kecskemét and Szigetcsép, during the last 6 years.
Winter hardiness of most of the Romanian varieties studied was similar to that of Mandulakajszi, a hardy Hungarian variety.
Performance of the early blooming Litoral and Venus varieties, however, was poor.
The rest of the varieties bloomed at middle time or late.
Fruits from self pollination were observed in all cases, but the rate of self-pollination varied very much.
Fruit set was improved in any case by cross-pollination, i.e. open pollination in a mixed plantation.
The ripening period was effectively prolonged by these varieties as lasting three weeks more subsequently to that of Magyar kajszi ("Hungarian Best"). variety.
The most suitable varieties for a particular site are to be chosen from the wide range of the assortment offered.
