APRICOT BREEDING FOR SHARKA RESISTANCE AT C.E.B.A.S-C.S.I.C., MURCIA (SPAIN).

Abstract
Sharka has become an enormous problem in Murcia during the last years.
The virus is spreading out quickly and elimination of infected trees only delays the advance of the disease.
An important part of our breeding program aims to obtain cultivars resistant to sharka.
The cultivars ‘Stark Early Orange’ and ‘Lito’, the French selections A2408, A2478 and ‘Avilara’, and specially the American cultivar ‘Goldrich’ have been used as resistant parents.
Since most of these cultivars have fruits of medium quality and ripening dates are medium to late, they are being crossed with early Spanish cultivars like ‘Currot’ and with medium ripening cultivars of high organoleptic quality like ‘Pepito del Rubio’ or of great interest for the processing industry like ‘Búlida’. Also crosses among resistant cultivars have been made in order to ensure the resistance in the progenies.
To date 31 different families with a total number of 1,414 seedlings have been planted.
Both parents and seedlings are being evaluated for sharka resistance.
Some of the seedlings have already shown susceptibility to sharka and the rest of them are still under evaluation.
Some progenies from ‘Stark Early Orange’ and ‘Currot’ have been evaluated for fruit quality and maturity.
