Abstract
It was found that the varieties – ‘Uralec’, ‘Gornoaltayskoe’, ‘Grushovka Moskovskaya’, ‘Iyulskoe Tschernenko’ and ‘Sibirka’ forms No. 6–7, 2L, 7, 2/31 are able to survive temperature down to -35°C without any damage.
The form No. 8–7, the xylem of which was slightly injured at a temperature -42°C, the bark, cambium and vegetative buds did not freeze even at -55°C. In hybrid families from crossing varieties resistant to low temperature with nonresistant ones, we can choose 2 – 18 % of seedlings with the frost resistance level of their parents.
Evaluation of combining ability showed that the variety ‘Renet Tschernenko’ had the best influence on the frost resistance. ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Cortland’ were the best of all the studied cultivars from the foreign selection for good combining ability.
The method of artificial cooling permits effective selection for cold resistant seedlings in the first phase of the selection process and thus avoides the necessity of waiting for naturally severe winters.
