RESULTS OF FRUIT BREEDING IN THE GDR

Abstract
The general task of fruit breeding in the GDR is the combination of the following characteristics: high yield, fruit quality, resistance, suitability for technical production measures.
Within this long-term combination breeding programme in the recent years 3 cultivars of apples, 2 cultivars of sweet cherries and 2 cultivars of black currant-gooseberry hybrids -Jochelbeere- were bred.
In addition we gave some promising selection so sour cherries, early plums, apple rootstocks and strawberries to the state examination institutes.
