Abstract
A simple computer programme has been developed which jointly evaluates 48 selected characters into one complex number.
For every character and its scores /mostly rated on a 1–9 scale/ the character weight were set in proportion to their importance for growing and breeding practice in Czechoslovakia.
The calculation usually starts from a threshold value determined by the general acceptance status of a cultivar by breeders and growers.
The magnitude of weights normally increases progressively or proportionaly /linearly/ with improving character performance, but sometimes other ways of grading are used.
After several trial runs two programme variants have been developed.
The first is for late storing cultivars and the second for summer ones.
There seems to be a good correlation between the complex number and the total value of the best 12 cultivars.
The highest complex number from 850 cultivars were obtained by four leading Czechoslovakian cultivars and two perspectively very good ones.
