Abstract
Walnut cultivation using tested varieties was started in Moldavia in the 1960’s after the development of vegetative multiplication methods for this species.
Selection and vegetative multiplication of the most valuable local forms was considered to be the most effective solution to the walnut varieties problem in the Moldavian Republic.
As a result of 25-years investigation on seed populations, selection, vegetative multiplication and competitive trial /about 50 000 trees were thoroughly observed/ carried out with 200 perspective cultivars, the following varieties were created for the first time in Moldavia – ‘Kalarashsky’, ‘Korzheutsky’, ‘Kostjuzhensky’, ‘Kishinevsky’ and ‘Skinossky’.
We continue to improve the existing varieties by means of introduction and selection from seed population of the local cultivars.
