Abstract
Altogether 60 parent varieties were crossed in 326 combinations.
After preselection 16 330 hybrids were evaluated in hybrid orchard.
The initial evaluation was concentrated on fruit quality, the state of health and growth of trees and later on the storage life of fruit. 576 hybrids were selected for station tests.
From them 24 promising selections covering the consume ripening season from the end of August till March were send to the National Variety Trials.
These comprise the first newly bred variety ‘Diana’ which was released in 1987. The description of the variety is given.
The varieties – ‘Conference’, ‘Nordhausener’ and Clapp’s Favourite’ were the most prolific parents.
