Abstract
The objective of supplying stone fruit orchards with virus-free, improved rootstocks has been realized in Central Europe.
At Cegléd /formerly the Station of the Horticultural Research Institute/ a virus-free seed producing stock orchard was established on 26 ha in 1972 resulting from a variety selection of 11 rootstock species initiated in 1952. It comprises more than 7000 trees.
Since 1976 the orchard has produced 810 kg of seeds of wild cherry, 6 150 kg of Prunus mahaleb, 3 710 kg of myrobalan, 8 250 kg of wild apricot, 15 440 kg of wild peach, 16 850 kg of Prunus x amygdalopersica and 2 730 kg seeds of other rootstock varieties.
Selected rootstock seeds and seedlings, marked C /i.e.
Cegléd/ have been introduced into Hungarian nurseries and also exported to the Federal and Democratic German Republics and Czechoslovakia.
Their stands are uniform, of good vitality, mostly of moderate growth and good compatibility with most fruit varieties.
