Abstract
Some 194 pear varieties and selections were analysed for vitamin C, dry matter, total acidity, total sugar, tanins, minerals, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
The data were processed by computer for each ripening season to provide a classification of the varieties according to their valuable chemical compositions.
The most valuable varieties are considered to be good potential genitors for fruit quality improvement by breeding.
For the July ripening season ‘Boiereasca Mare’ and ‘Beurre Giffard’; for the August ripening season ‘Mici Rosii’ and ‘Precoce de Trivale’ and for September – October ‘Madame Dupuis’ were the best potential genitors for fruit quality.
