Abstract
The potential of Gomphrena globosa as a landscape ornamental plant has not been maximized because of its low genetic diversity.
The aim of this research was to discover the potential of gamma rays and colchicine to increase the genetic diversity of Gomphrena globosa. The research was arranged in a randomized block design and consisted of eight mutation induction treatments, with three replicates.
The research was arranged in a randomized block design, consisting of on eight mutation induction treatments (control, gamma ray irradiation at 100, 200, 300, and 400 Gy) and soaking with colchicine (0.01, 0.025, and 0.05%), with three replicates.
Gamma-ray irradiation was carried out at the Atomic and Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) while the mutation induction with colchicine was done at the Genetic and Plant Breeding Laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University.
The results showed that radiation at 114 Gy and and colchine at 0.04% v/v have a great potential for the induction of mutations on seeds of G. globosa. The treatment with gamma rays up to 400 Gy and colchicine up to 0.05% (v/v) might also contribute to the induction of new flower colors, flower shapes and leaf shapes.
The treatment with gamma rays up to 300 Gy and colchicine concentrations up to 0.05% could also contribute to mutations in leaf width, length, and leaf diameter in Gomphrena globosa.
