Abstract
Global climate change has caused reduction of crop productivity resulting in the decrease in quality, quantity, and market price of the yield.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of modification of applications of the physical environment, nutrition, and plant growth regulator to initiation of flowering.
The study was carried out in the plastic house of the Segunung Experimental Field in the Indonesian Ornamental Plants Research Institute (IOCRI) in Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia, from January to December 2019. This study consisted of two separate experiments.
The first experiment was arranged using a split-plot design with three replications with modified watering treatments as main plot, and application of H3PO4 solution through the leaves as subplot, and application of salicylic acid as sub-sub plot.
The second experiment tested the effects of different concentrations of H3PO4 and salicylic acid.
The results showed that the diameter of the stem, length of the flower stalk, percentage of flowering, and vase life of the flowers were influenced by a single factor of watering treatment; whereas, the vase life of chrysanthemum flowers is influenced by the single treatment of H3PO4. Meanwhile the percentage of flowering is influenced by the application of salicylic acid.
There were no interactions among the treatments on all parameters observed.
Final plant height and number of flowers were not influenced by a single treatment and interactions between treatments.
Watering three times a week resulted in a higher percentage of flowering by 9.29% compared to the application of watering once a week.
The application of salicylic acid affected the percentage of flowering to reach an average of 9.76% higher than that of without the application of salicylic acid at 88 days after planting.
Application of H3PO4 through leaves with a concentration of 200 ppm and salicylic acid with a concentration of 250 ppm increased stem and flower diameter and percentage of plant flowering.
The highest percentage of flowering (80%) was obtained from the treatment of H3PO4 at 200 ppm and salicylic acid at 250 ppm, whereas with H3PO4 at 300 ppm and salicylic acid at 125 ppm the flowering percentage was 36.67%. The longest flower vase life was obtained from the plants applied with H3PO4 application at 100 ppm and salicylic acid at 250 ppm.
