Characterization of morphological diversity in Calathea species and cultivars at the Sukamantri Ornamental Farm, Bogor, Indonesia

Abstract
Calathea is a genus grown for the high ornamental value of its foliage. Calathea leaves have attractive color combinations, patterns, and unique leaf morphologies.
The aim of this project was to characterize and analyze the morphological diversity across 20 cultivars and species grown at the Sukamantri Ornamental Farm, in Bogor Indonesia.
Each species/cultivar consisted of three plant samples that had reached maturity.
The traits observed were plant height, lamina length, leaf width, petiole length, leaf angle, leaf shape, and adaxial and abaxial leaf colors.
Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis (PCA), and a heat map for cluster analysis.
The results from this study suggest the existence of significant differences for plant height, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, and leaf angle.
Plant height ranged from 12.9 to 41.9 cm, the petiole length from 4.53 to 17.50 cm, the leaf width from 3.87 to 15.57 cm,and the leaf angle from 45 to 122°. Nine species displayed at least two colors adaxially, five cultivars showed three to four, and one cultivar showed five.
The PCA revealed a positive correlation between plant height, petiole length, and leaf width;and also between petiole length and leaf length, between leaf length and leaf width; between leaf length and adaxial leaf color number; while the the heatmap clustering analysis showed a relationship between the leaf angle and the mean number of colors abaxially.
Results also suggest that the species and cultivars can be divided into two groups with different traits.
Group A has wide variation in plant height, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, and number of adaxial colors, while in group B low values are shown consistently.
Taken together this study suggests that some materials have potential for its use during plant breeding.
