Abstract
Thrips sp. is one of the major constraints on chrysanthemum cultivation (Dendranthema grandiflora). Therefore, effective and environmentally friendly pest control efforts of the insect pest are needed.
Efforts to control Thrips sp. on chrysanthemums with botanical insecticides is one of the alternative solutions and is expected to minimize losses of chrysanthemum caused by these pests.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of several botanical insecticides to control Thrips parvispinus pest on chrysanthemum.
The botanical insecticides were prepared from T. vogelii, clove, T. sureni and eucalyptus oil at the Indonesian Ornamental Crops Research Institute (IOCRI). The experimental design was a randomized block design with the treatment of 2.5 and 3.0% T. vogelii, 1.5 and 2.0% clove, 2.5 and 3.0% T. sureni, 2.0 and 2.5% eucalyptus oil, commercial botanical insecticide Neem Plus, synthetic insecticide Abamectin 18 EC, and untreated plants as control.
The results showed that T. vogelii, T. sureni and eucalyptus oil in all concentrations had the lowest attack intensity until 75 DAP. The untreated plants showed the highest attack intensity even up to flowering stage.
These three botanical insecticides also showed consistent suppression in terms of the attacked plants.
During vegetative stage, only 2.5 and 3.0% T. vogelii, 3.0% T. sureni, and 2.0% eucalyptus oil showed the efficacy more than 30.0%. Highest marketable flower yields were obtained from 2.5 and 3.0% T. vogelii and 2.0% eucalyptus oil, followed by 3.0% T. sureni, 1.5% clove, 2.5% T. sureni oil, and Abamectin 18EC. The insecticide treatments had less improvement effect of flower quality.
