Abstract
Mint (Mentha piperita L., Lamiaceae) is a herbal species cultivated primarily for its essential oil from their leaves, but also popular to be added as infused water and culinary.
Mint plant height could reach >75 cm, and the branches tend to grow laterally, particularly in low light environments.
Our current study examines potential uses of plant growth retardant paclobutrazol to control mint height and to improve the ornamental quality of potted mint.
Treatments are paclobutrazol at 5, 10, and 20 ppm applied as 100 mL media drenching per pot at 5 weeks after planting; control plants were water-drenched using the same volume at the same time.
Each treatment consists of 20 plants.
Our study demonstrated that paclobutrazol at 5 or 10 ppm applied as a medium drench resulted in bushier plants which made the plants look more attractive, but these concentrations were not effective to reduce mint plant height.
A higher leaf chlorophyll and anthocyanin content were recorded with the highest PBZ concentration of 20 ppm compared to control, but the plants were significantly smaller in terms of height and canopy width.
Further studies should examine whether repeated PBZ applications at lower concentrations are more effective to produce shorter and compact potted plants.
