Abstract
One way to develop new superior hybrid cultivars of Vanda is by interspecific hybridizations.
This plant breeding method can generate new types of progenies with various flower hue and color.
The information on phenotypic diversity among Vanda germplasm will aid the selection of potential parents for hybrid production.
This study aims to evaluate the phenotypic diversity of Vanda accessions as breeding materials at the Indonesian Ornamental Crop Research Institute (IOCRI) using various morphological markers.
Fifty-two qualitative characters based on the previously developed descriptors were used to describe the phenotypic diversity of Vanda accessions, followed by analysis using NTSYS PC version 2.02. Results of the evaluation indicated that the similarity coefficient based on all the qualitative characters among evaluated Vanda accessions ranged from 0.27 to 0.64. The constructed dendrogram based on the 52 qualitative characters divided the accessions into several groups and each group consisted of certain numbers of Vanda accessions.
Based on their vegetative and generative characters, grouping of the Vanda accessions were identified as similar highly similar for the vegetative characters, and diverse for the generative characters, or highly diverse for the vegetative but similar for the generative characters.
Results of the characterization indicated all Vanda accessions are late flowering.
Therefore, research to find the solution for early flowering Vanda species should become the focus for future research.
