Abstract
Vanda is a genus of orchids that is very popular in the tropics and subtropics because of its colorful and diverse flower patterns, large flowers, attractive flower shapes, frequent flowering with long vase life, and relatively easy cultivation.
Breeding new Vanda cultivars is usually conducted through interspecific or intergeneric crossings.
The objective of this study was to produce Vanda progenies with superior characters that are close to the Vanda pot ideotype.
The experiment was conducted at the Indonesian Ornamental Crops Research Institute’s (IOCRI) experiment station in Segunung, Cianjur, West Java, from January 2017 to December 2019. The research method was descriptive by observing and recording qualitative and quantitative characters of the flowers from 16 progenies and the two-parent population.
The data were analyzed using the NTSYS v 2.1 program.
The results of the study showed that the morphological characters of the 16 progenies of the M 440 population more closely resemble the characteristics of the male parents.
With a similarity coefficient of 0.126, the population M 440 can be divided into three groups; group I consisted of five progenies and male parents, group II consisted of 11 progenies, and group III consisted of the female parent.
