Abstract
The genus Bucephalandra is an aquatic plant endemic to Borneo, and it is a quite popular among worlds aquatic plant enthusiasts and used as decoration in their aquascape designs. Bucephalandra sp. has a high morphological diversity.
Its diverse morphology is linked to the varied habitats in which it grows and the intensity of its exposure to sunlight.
The high morphological diversity leads to variations of the plants trade names in the aquatic biota markets.
The current study is limited to the testing of Bucephalandra variants based on their trade names that are traded in the aquatic biota markets in Jakarta and the surrounding area.
The objective is to establish the genetic diversity and plant kinship within the genus Bucephalandra based on the sequence markers of rbcl chloroplast DNA among the plants 177 trade name variants.
The study is expected to be the first step in the study of genus Bucephalandra. The result of the phylogenetic analysis with MEGA 7 shows that there are three main groups; i.e., Group I, which encompasses 102 trade names; Group II, which covers 64 trade names; and Group III with 11 trade names.
The genetic distance between Group I and Group II is (0.184±0.008), the genetic distance between Group I and Group III is (0.433±0.017), and last but not least, the genetic distance between Group II and III is (0.450±0.017). The internal genetic distance within Group I is (0.1251±0.0067); while, the internal genetic distance within Group II is (0.2683±0.0092) and the internal genetic distance within Group III is (0.6577±0.0233).
