Abstract

This paper presents an overview on the use of the post-genomic technology of RNA interference (RNAi) via host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) and spray-induced gene silnecing (SIGS) approach to control pest insects important in horticulture and biosafety to non-target organisms (NTOs). At about 20 years after the Nobel Prize recognition in 2006, today RNAi has been harnessed in agriculture to develop crops with enhanced resistance to pests and diseases.
In addition, with the development of RNAi-based insecticides, polymer chemistry and cell cultures can be useful tools in screening the respective importance of metabolic stability and cellular uptake and intracellular entrapment, providing knowledge in efficacy optimization.
Finally, the importance of anti-resistance tactics will be discussed.
