IDENTIFICATION OF INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDS AND DETERMINATION OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SPECIES IN THE GENUS LILIUM BY ISOELECTRIC FOCUSING
IEF has been used within the framework of an interspecific breeding programme Lilium for the identification of wide interspecific hybrids and for measuring relationships between species.
Interspecific hybrids of L. longiflorum with L. candidum, L. pumilum, L. rubellum and L. x ‘Mont Blanc’ were used together with their parents.
The bulb scales show a high activity of general proteins, while with leaves a pronounced peroxydase activity was found.
With the peroxydase isozyme pattern, the hybrids were in all cases easily to distinguish from their parents.
Of 19 species, out of 3 different sections of the genus Lilium, leaves were sampled for IEF and stained for peroxydase activity.
A wide variation in isozyme pattern between the species could be demonstrated.
Species within one of the sections present more similarity than species within the other sections.
L. nepalense, an until now difficult to locate species, shows isozyme patterns similar to L. auratum.
The data were used for a Principal Component Analysis.
