Abstract
Mitochondria isolated from iris bulbs which have been treated for early flowering with ethylene, smoke or high temperatures, show an alternative respiration, while mitochondria from untreated bulbs (30°C stored) do not.
In the range from 36°C to 40°C the extent of the induced alternative respiration increases with temperature.
Ethylene production of iris bulbs is very low.
A burst of ethylene is measured after 7 days of anaerobiosis, leading to induction of alternative respiration and to morphogenic changes in the bulbs.
