POT DAFFODILS
This is done between half November until flowers can be picked outside in the field.
Forcing is done in trays which are ensilaged nearby the greenhouses.
For early forcing, bulbs are mostly planted and cooled inside as the temperatures outside are too high for optimal treatment.
Research was done to find out if it was possible to give the complete 9°C treatment required for late forcing in rooting cells.
Since the shoots grow too long when bulbs were cooled at 9°C, lower temperatures were tested.
These temperatures however kept stems too short for cut flower production.
As potted daffodils should be shorter this seemed a good method in shortening stem length.
A short potplant looks better, occupies less room during transport and does not bend.
Depending on what variety is used as potplant, stems are best between 20 and 30 cm.
Dutch marketing experts prefer 10 to 15 flowers per pot.
To obtain this number of flowers, more bulbs per pot have to be planted, or multi-flowered varieties.
From the first experiments on, five methods to obtain potdaffodils, were tested.
In this paper, these methods are discussed and a conclusion is drawn as to the most suitable one.
