CONTROL OF VOLUNTEER CEREALS AFTER EMERGENCE OF BULBOUS CROPS

Bulbs planted in soil have to be covered with straw to protect them against frost damage.
Cereal seeds still present in the straw may germinate and develop into plants that may cause a reduction of bulb yield, due to competition.

In field experiments, several post-emergence herbicides, viz., alloxydim-sodium, sethoxydim, and fluazifop-butyl, have been tested on their action against oat, wheat, and rye plants and on their phytotoxicity to several bulbous crops.

Of them, fluazifop-butyl proved to be the most active compound, Oat plants were found to be more sensitive to herbicidal action than rye and wheat plants.
Fluazifop-butyl caused a discoloration of flowers of tulip and -to a lesser degree- of hyacinth, but not of several other bulbous crops.

Recent results obtained with a new compound from this group of selective herbicides suggest that this chemical is highly active against cereal plants and causes no flower discoloration.
