NARCISSUS: FLOWERS PER TONNE OF BULBS

Flowers per tonne of bulbs was investigated over four years and two cultivars to assess its constancy and to investigate how it varies seasonally.
The flowering potential of a bulb sample depends on bulb number, bulb unit number per bulb and on flower number per bulb unit.
With larger bulbs, bulb unit number per unit weight of bulbs falls; this is only partly compensated by an increased bulb unit number per bulb.
This is a major cause of both stability and variability in flower number per tonne of bulbs.
The other major contributing factor is flower number per bulb unit, which also shows considerable variation.
It is not possible to state whether this variation is seasonally determined.
The critical bulb unit weight for flowering also shows differences between seasons.
Some practical implications are discussed.
