Abstract
In two trials nitrogen uptake from the soil and nitrogen distribution within the plant was studied.
Between the time of planting and March the nitrogen content of the plant increased slightly.
Application of N in December raised the N content somewhat more, especially that of the roots.
From March onward the nitrogen content increased considerably.
Plants from seed bulbs, fertilized in the previous season, were richer in N at first, but later the difference from the content of non-fertilized plants decreased.

Plants from seed bulbs, fertilized in the previous season, were richer in N at first, but later the difference from the content of non-fertilized plants decreased.
In two experiments, application of the optimum N rate in December resulted in the same maximum yield as application of the optimum rate in February.
In another experiment, with partition of 100 kg N/ha over the two periods a single application of the moderate amount of N in December was inferior to a split application of the same amount in December and February.
In plants from large seed bulbs the optimum N concentration in leaves fourteen days after flowering was about 3.3% N and of bulbs at harvest 1.4%.
