Abstract
Caladium is a tropical tuberous plant, used as a foliage pot plant.
Growing season was found to be limited to the period in which prevailing temperatures were above 12°C. Storage of caladium tubers at temperatures below 20°C, but above freezing, resulted in hampered growth processes; sprouting rate was slower and final growth of leaves and daughter tubers was greatly reduced.
Degree of damage was directly related to the duration of exposure to low temperatures and could be assesed by the degree of TTC reduction by the buds.
Solute leakage and ethylene production were not related to chilling damage.
Maintaining atmospheric high humidity during low temperature storage for 14 days prevented the chilling injury symptoms.
