Abstract
Bulb-scale explants of iris cultured in vitro produced adventitious shoots at the junction of the basal plate and the scales.
The optimal culture condition for regeneration was 20°C in the dark on medium containing half the normal concentration of Murashige and Skoog salts.
The mean number of shoots per explant was ca 10. An interruption of the 20°C-culture by a period of 4 weeks at 5°C enhanced bulb formation of the shoots.
The total bulblet weight produced per single outer-scale explant was higher when the cold treatment was given at a later stage of the culture at 20°C. This was not observed for double inner-scale explants.
