Abstract
Prolonged axillary bud dormancy and stubborn rooting in stem cuttings of Dieffenbachia picta rendered poor vegetative multiplication and subsequent growth and establishment of the plants.
Therefore investigations on the effect of gibberellic acid (GA3) and kinetin (kn, as shoot initiator) and indolbutyric acid (as root initiator) were undertaken.

In these studies different aqeous concentrations of GA3, Kn and IBA were used.
They were applied to the stem cuttings either by soaking method or axillary bud exposure through cotton swab method.
GA3 and Kn gave inconsistent results and as such the data obtained is inconclusive.
Whereas all the three doses of IBA induced early and better rooting.
It was most pronounced with 0.1% IBA solution.
Influence of these three phytohormones on root differentiation was also investigated in green house and mist chamber conditions.
The data obtained indicate differential response of phytohormones in varying conditions.
