Abstract
Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ needs at least some shoot growth immediately after rooting for a successful propagation by cuttings.

The rooting potential was promoted by heavy shading (50–60% reduction of irradiance) during both stock plant growth and rooting phase.
However, such light conditions reduced the number of cuttings showing spontaneous bud burst and shoot growth after rooting.
On the other hand, light shading did not significantly reduce rooting percentage or shoot growth.
Rooting hormone treatments (auxin) had no significant influence if stock plant growth and rooting took place under heavy shade, and were most effective if high light levels were given during both phases.
