Abstract
The behaviour of the axillary buds of walnut stump sprouts was studied after pruning treatments accompanied or not by complete defoliation.
The treatments were carried out at weekly intervals during the growing season and pruning was done at different node positions.
The treatments were carried out at weekly intervals during the growing season and pruning was done at different node positions.
The behaviour of the axillary buds released from correlative inhibition was characterized by different variables : number and percentage of breaking buds, rate of budbreaking, subsequent growth of axillary shoots.
These experiments showed that the number (or percentage) of breaking buds was a good and easy means of distinguishing the effects of the treatments and describing the variations with time in the physiological state of the leafy shoot.
From June until the end of August, the rate of bud breaking tended to increase : it seemed to depend both on the temperature and on a continuous variation in the physiological state of the buds.
