WALNUT GROWING ACTIVITIES AT TAURUS MOUNTAINS IN TURKIYE
The station is established at 1100 m from the sea level, on Taurus Mountains.
The trees have started bearing on the second year after their plantings.
Although they have not yet reached to their full bearing stage, the works were very encouraging for the villagers located around the Station.
Beside the adaptation works budding and grafting experiments were also started.
In spring period, graftings were exercised on the thick stems and chip buddings on the thin stems.
In both methods dormant sticks which were kept in cold store were used.
In Autumn patch and chip buddings were exercised.
Promising results were obtained from chip buddings in Spring and patch budding in Autumn.
In order to hasten the growth of the seedlings and to let them be ready for patch budding in the autumn the seeds were stratified at 3°C in a cold room and sawn in 1.5 l tin pots in February.
In April they were transplanted to the orchards half and half to Pozanti Research Station and the Faculty of Agriculture in Adana which is 50 m from the sea level.
In September their height and stem diameter (5 cm from the ground level) were measured.
