Abstract
Walnuts were introduced to Australia less than two hundred years ago.
The Australian walnut industry is young, and the production of walnuts compared to world production is very small.
The paper describes the distribution of walnut groves in terms of soils and climatic factors which limit the production of walnuts to the southern region of Australia.
The recently formed national, Australian Walnut Industry Association, sees as its immediate challenge, assistance with the selection of cultivars suitable for Australian conditions, and a strategic plan for industry development, including marketing.
