Histoire du Chenin blanc en Afrique du Sud

Abstract

In the early years, 17^th and 18^th century, the first grapes were pressed in 1659, from two varieties; Chenin blanc, then called “steendruiven” is one of them.
In the 19^th century South Africa was overtaken by Britain, steen plantings were overtaken by Semillon which eclipses other varieties.
In recent history, different actions have changed the perception of Chenin blanc from cheap and cheerful to a high quality variety.

Résumé

Dans les débuts, au XVII° et XVIII° siècles, les premières grappes ont été pressées en 1659 à partir de deux variétés, dont une était le Chenin blanc que l’on nommait alors “steendruiven”. Au cours du XIX° siècle, les plantations de Steen ont été supplantées par le semillon qui a eclipsé toutes les autres variétés.
Dans l’histoire récente, differents actions ont changé la perception du Chenin blanc qui était celle d’un vin de soif pas cher, pour un vin de haute qualité.
