Abstract
The term “closerie” is nowadays mainly known as the old name for small vineyards, the name indicating that the whole was probably enclosed by walls or hedges.
If this definition is close to the historical origin, it needs to be clarified.
We will present the evolution of this term during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and then in the 17th and 18th centuries.
