Abstract
Since the 15th century, the names pineau and plant d’Anjou have been in constant use in documentary evidence.
Chenin is very rare.
During the 18th century plant d’Anjou almost disappeared and pineau was the only name in use.
Around 1875, ampelographs chose Chenin, mainly in use in Poitou, in order to solve the puzzling problem of pineau in the Loire Valley and pineau in Burgundy.
The adoption of Chenin and Pinot solved the problem between 1875 and 1900.
