Abstract
The oldest known apple cultivars in Estonia are ‘Revalsher Birnapfel’ and ‘Livländisher Borsdorfer’. The selection of apple tree cultivars based on the characteristics of fruit has yielded numerous new cultivars.
Professional apple cultivar breeding started in 1945 under the guidance of Professor Aleksander Siimon (1900-1970). Professor Siimon and Kalju Kask (1929-2021) bred many apple cultivars that are currently grown in commercial orchards.
Breeding for apples that have good flavour and trees that are winter and disease resistant has yielded new cultivars ‘Kalju’, ‘Virve’, and ‘Uku’.
