Abstract
The present study aims to present the history of fruit growing in the Land of Făgăraș, highlighting the fruit species, schools, and personalities who have influenced the region not only locally but also beyond. ‘The Land of Făgăraș’ is a historic erosion depression of 1000 km2 in the South of the Transylvania Plateau in Romania.
Fruit growing in the region was a stable activity.
In 1721, the census listed more than 137 installations for fruit distillation, and in the 19th century, the number of fruit species was recorded. 239.309 trees were in total, including apples, pears, cherries, sour cherries, plums, autumn apricots, nuts, and mulberries.
Fifteen years later, the number of fruit trees increased by 100,000, with the addition of almonds and chestnuts.
In recent years, fruit shrubs have received more space.
Climate change also influenced this region, with exotic species entering the local farm orchards.
