Abstract
The article presents the chronological development of horticultural crop processing in our country over the past 105 years, from the end of World War I to the present day.
Three distinct periods are described, as follows: the pioneering stage (1918-1945) which represents the pillar of the horticultural products processing in Romania thanks to the courageous and inspired actions which drew and built up the bases of vegetable & fruit industrialization; the beginning was complex and challenging, especially due the poverty and social instability existing after war; in the food processing field, rudimentary methods and equipment were used; the Romanian specialists with western education represented the tool of the progress and their updated knowledge and mentality made a real difference and transformation in the field and society, as well; the communist period (1946-1989) known for the centralized management focused on huge investment works which made possible to upgrade the preservation, storage and valorisation of horticultural products; the transition and EU integration period (1990-2023) characterized by the necessity of adaptation to the capitalist economy.
The foundations of horticultural research in the field were laid in 1937 with the creation of the department for the storage and processing of horticultural products at ICAR, led by I.F. Radu.
In the meantime, research has undergone various transformations.
Currently, ICDIMPH/IRDPMPH – “Horting” is the institute that continues the tradition and promotes research in the field of horticultural products processing.
