Abstract
The paper presents an overview of the research and development activities in the field of viticulture and oenology in Romania, from the invasion of phylloxera, first identified in 1880 in Arad and in 1884 in Chitorani, Prahova, to the present.
The directions of action implemented by the authorities at various stages are presented, and within each stage, the actions undertaken to develop research in the field of viticulture and oenology, in line with its evolution at the European level, are described.
A crucial stage was the restoration of viticulture heritage, which had been severely affected by the phylloxera invasion, through the establishment of several nurseries with the direct involvement of state authorities.
This action had both the role of multiplying viticultural planting material and analyzing the behavior of HPDS, as well as the evolution of Romanian vinifera cultivars and those introduced from the international assortment, depending on the rootstocks used in the grafting process.
The modernization of the viticultural and winemaking sector, marked by the establishment of 11 research stations and 4 faculties of horticulture, represented another significant stage in the evolution of the vitiviniculture domain.
Valuable results were obtained in the field of vine improvement, the production of viticultural planting material, vine culture and wine production technologies, wine chemistry and microbiology, and the valorization of secondary products.
The editorial activity, as well as the specific actions that contributed to the affirmation of Romanian viticulture and oenology sector at the international level, are also presented.
