Abstract
The protection of intellectual property rights is a means of encouraging innovation and invention.
Among all forms of protection, the patent is one of the most used methods of protection in the field of horticulture.
The study was carried out to highlight the evolution of research in the field of horticulture from the patent’s perspective.
It was also considered the capacity of the research activity to provide new methods and technologies, as well as improved tools and techniques with economic value.
For the purpose of this study, the patents granted by relevant Romanian institutions were considered.
An attempt was made to identify the first Romanian method of invention protection before the patent in the field of horticulture.
At the same time, the databases of State Office for Inventions and Trademarks (OSIM), but also of the various resort institutions were analyzed to identify the main categories covered by the patents in the field, the percentage of the Romanian inventors, as well as to establish possible connections between the main categories of patents and their impact on the evolution of horticulture in Romania.
