Abstract
Türkiye has historically been known as an important producer, trader, and consumer of horticultural plants.
Its geographic location, either by creating diverse ecosystems or by serving as a passageway between continents and gene centers, enabled it to benefit from the rich natural and agrobiodiversity.
Additionally, archeological findings continue to reveal the long history of agriculture in Anatolia, including a diverse range of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plant species.
Parallel to this importance, horticulture has been one of the main fields in the research and extension of agriculture.
As the numbers increased, faculties of agriculture, national research institutes, and research units of corporate companies needed more opportunities to exchange their findings, discuss them, and disseminate their results.
To serve this aim, the first National Congress on Horticulture was organized in 1992 by Ege University’s Faculty of Agriculture, aiming to promote networking, archive, and disseminate research results.
These efforts also led to the establishment of the Turkish Society for Horticultural Science in 1992. The main objective of this non-profit civil society organization is to conduct scientific research on various subjects related to horticulture, to prepare publications, to disseminate the results of research to the serve producers and extensionists, to carry out activities to encourage networking, to help the development of their professional functions and to protect their interests, to provide all kinds of necessary cooperation and organization between universities, research institutions and extensionists public and private sector organizations.
Since its founding in 1992, national horticultural congresses and thematic symposia have been organized regularly in conjunction with their national counterparts.
The Turkish Society also aims to serve as a bridge for international relationships, furthering scientific cooperation.
Since 1998, TSHS has represented Türkiye at the ISHS. Various international meetings are held in Türkiye under the auspices of ISHS, including the 30th International Horticultural Congress.
