On its 30th birthday: EUFRIN history and origin with special reference to WG 2 fruit thinning – a personal perspective

Abstract
Background: funding for horticultural research was drying out in 1992. Results: on personal initiative, Prof.
Fritz Lenz sent out invitations by post, and an inaugural meeting was organized at the Institut für Obstbau und Gemüsebau (INRES- Horticultural Science) in Bonn.
This led to EUFRIN, the European Network of Fruit Research Institutes, which celebrates its 30th birthday in 2023 time for a brief look at its foundation in Bonn in 1993. With the current webinar opportunities and particularly during COVID-19, some EUFRIN meetings now extend across Europes borders and include participants from the Americas.
The great success of EUFRIN also served as the prototype for its sister organization, EUVRIN, the vegetable research network, with meetings on water sensors in Brussels in November 2016 and on fertigation in April 2017 in Almeria.
This short poster contribution to S1 History of Horticulture briefly describes who, where, when, and why EUFRIN was founded, including the inaugural meeting at Bonn University in October 1993, with Michael Blanke serving as secretary for the first five years.
With email and the internet still on the horizon, the printed newsletter was originally sent out to individuals by mail.
The emphasis of this contribution is on the WG fruit thinning.
