Abstract
Enthusiastic consumer response has led to a rapid expansion of the kiwifruit growing industry in many parts of the world.
According to reliable estimates, total orchard acreage was over 33 thousand hectares and total yield more than 161 thousand metric tonnes in 1985. New Zealand is the leading grower, followed by Italy and the U.S.A. International trade in kiwifruit accounts for a large part of total yields.
Almost 100 thousand tonnes changed hands in the world marketplace in the 1985–86 season, i.e. 61.3% of the 1985 crop.
Increasing production has, however, given rise to doubts about market outlets.
Drastic price reductions can be avoided only by increasing and diversifying consumption and through closer international coordination of production and marketing.
