Abstract
A large proportion of kiwifruit, estimated at between 7 and 30% of the total Italian yield, cannot be sold on the fresh fruit market because of irregular shape and small size.
Besides adverse weather conditions, inadequate pollination is considered to be one the main factors affecting the regular development of fruit.
According to several observations, a fruit should contain 1,000 –1400 seeds to reach the size required for high quality standards.
Therefore pollination appears to be a key factor for the economic success of kiwi orchards.

Artificial pollination may represent an interesting way to produce high quality fruit.
